November 2011 Trip Update 5

The team spent Thursday visiting Work for Life entrepreneurs around Kampala. The first stop was Emmanuel who started a gnut (like peanuts) business after receiving a loan in March 2011. Then the team met with Elvis who runs a food (Irish potatoes and rice). Elvis was one of the first entrepreneurs selected for the Work for Life program in February 2010. From there the team went to visit Harriet’s food shop in a small market on the outskirts of Kampala. The final stop of the day was at Morris’ technology services company. Morris obtained an IT degree through an international program and started providing basic technology services to local businesses. From there, Morris gained his first U.S. customer after Alan Stalcup, CEO of CourseTrends traveled to Uganda with Work for Life in November of 2010. Alan saw great potential in Morris and determined that it would be beneficial to his company to outsource certain technical support functions to Morris’ new company. Work for Life hopes these pioneering efforts by CourseTrends and Morris will forge the way for more partnerships in the future.
