March 2012 Trip to Uganda: Day 1

As the Work For Life experience got underway, we commenced our cultural immersion with a trip to a church in Bugalobi sponsored by Full Gospel Church. Surrounded by singing children, our team had a chance to interact with children who live in the surrounding slums. The worship time was both uplifting and humbling as people of all ages and multiple nations joined in singing.

The day continued with a visit to the childhood home of Evah, a graduate of the African Children’s Choir and skilled tourguide. Her mother, sister and nieces greeted us warmly and fed us a meal fit for royalty.

We were impressed to see how close to self-sustaining they were on a small family plot, with cows, goats and chickens along with pineapples, mangos, coffee and avocados.

That evening, we sampled some not-so-local cuisine with a trip to CafĂ© Roma for pizza. Unfortunately, they’d run out of cheese, so we made do with cheese-less pizza and other menu options.  The great conversation made up for the menu shortfall, so the day ended on a high note. Bigger things were yet to come.
